American Gods season two: Shadow stands among the Gods as Old and New prepare to battle

Shadow Moon looks in over his head as the Old and New Gods prepare to face off in the new season of American Gods.

A teaser clip for the series was released at New York Comic-Con on Friday, and in just 20 seconds it promised things were going to get even weirder for our deity friends.

In the new footage, Mr Wednesday, played by Ian McShane, is seen introducing Shadow (Ricky Whittle) to a new team of demons.

Meanwhile, Mr World (Crispin Glover) proves to be an ever-looming presence and Mad Sweeney (Pablo Schrieber) looks like an ever-brooding threat to the status quo.

So basically…business as usual?

Neil Gaiman, who wrote the novel the show is based on, promises something ‘brutal and beautiful’ as the show heads into its second season.

He told Deadline: ‘Season 2 goes even deeper, even more deeply, even more painfully into the heart of America right now, what it means to be American right now. It gets to look back into the 1930s back at the rise of fascism briefly in America.’

‘We also go deeper into our characters, so you get to find out what Shadow was like as a kid,’ he added. ‘You get to go much more deeply into Shadow’s relationship with Laura, into Laura’s relationship with Mad Sweeney, into Wednesday’s relationship with everyone. You get to spend more time in the company of the new gods.’

The show has suffered numerous departures between the first season and second, with showrunner Bryan Fuller jumping ship and being replaced by Lost writer Jesse Alexander.

Gillian Anderson, who was a highlight as new god Media, has also confirmed she won’t be appearing in season two, with it widely assumed she’ll be replaced with a new actress.

As her character is constantly shape-shifting (previously appearing as David Bowie and Marilyn Monroe as well), it is not out of the realm of possibility.

American Gods is back on Amazon Prime and Starz in 2019.
