Schitt’s Creek star Dan Levy has revealed that another character is about to come out in season 5 – and it’s going to be emotional as hell.
The actor and writer, who stars as David Rose in the sitcom, has admitted that writing the upcoming episode left him in tears.
Speaking to PrideSource, Dan said: ‘It’s a particular moment that I had to write that is something that most queer people go through and articulating that, dramatizing that, is just a very meaningful episode for me and for a character in our show.’
‘It’s a coming out episode,’ he confirmed. ‘So getting to write that and trying to find a way around that kind of story that’s been told several times in film and television and literature, finding a dynamic way into that story and out of that story, was probably the greatest joy and challenge I’ve had as a writer for TV.’
‘Now that we’ve cut and polished the episode it’s my proudest episode we’ve done as a show,’ Dan added.
Schitt’s Creek has been widely praised for its LGBT representation on the screen, with Dan’s character David being an openly pansexual character, who has been seen in a thrupple, a hetero relationship and now in a same-sex relationship with business partner, Patrick.
As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Dan admits that the show has become a great vessel for positive representation that he couldn’t see himself when he was younger.
He said: ‘I think back to high school when I was still in the closet and wondering if I would ever be able to live out in the open.
‘To now be in the position that I am at, getting to write what I find to be a really lovely queer romance that millions of people get to watch, it’s quite profound.’
The story follows a riches-to-rags family of four who are forced to move to a small town named Schitt’s Creek after a bad business decision left them with nothing.
Dan stars in the show alongside his father, American Pie’s Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy.
Schitt’s Creek is available now on Netflix.
