Hasbro has unveiled a new line of miniature figures in retro packaging featuring heroes and villains alike as part of their Marvel Legends toy line. No doubt this news will please fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel and its characters have been around for ages, but they’ve likely never been as popular as they are now. The MCU is one of the highest-grossing franchises of all time, and with Disney behind the scenes, there’s more merchandise in circulation than ever before.
The MCU film series itself, unfortunately, has fallen on somewhat hard times. The COVID-19 pandemic forced them to hit the brakes on their release schedule, marking the single most significant gap between releases since the franchise’s inauguration with 2008’s Iron Man. Black Widow will be the first release since Spider-Man: Far From Home in July of 2019. Though the film was supposed to release in May 2020, less than a year after its predecessor, it has been delayed twice, now releasing a full year later than planned and almost two years after the last film. Of course, given the nature of the overarching plot between films, any delay to one causes a knock-on effect, pushing every following movie forward. It’s a tricky situation for a cinematic feat of such a scale.
Hasbro has announced the Marvel Legends Retro line of 3.75-inch action figures. Pre-orders for the toys will open September 25 at 5 P.M. EST on the Hasbro Pulse website. The figures are packaged with retro-inspired packaging details and boast five points of articulation. There are three two-packs in this inaugural release: Captain America and Black Panther, Iron Man and Cyclops, and Spider-Man and Electro. Each pack costs 20 dollars, and they are set to release properly sometime in Fall 2020.
The Hasbro Pulse brand places emphasis on products for dedicated fans. Its product lines include popular action-packed franchises such as Star Wars, Transformers, and Ghostbusters. These franchises are big with both kids and adults, so these nicely-detailed figures would be equally at home in a playroom and on a collector’s shelf. The packaging is visually appealing, sporting the saturated look of these characters from their initial years of popularity. Each pack comes in a box that resembles a comic book cover, with an individual package featuring blown-up character art inside for each toy. The individual packaging also features a large number one indicating that this is only the first edition in the line. Thankfully, Marvel got out ahead of leakers on this product. They weren’t so lucky with the Eternals action figures.
Marvel fans will be pleased to have some good news coming their way. So far, their cinematic prospects seem dismal. There are several Marvel Cinematic Universe films on the docket; it’s just a matter of when it will be safe and financially viable enough to release them in theaters. Perhaps Disney will have to bite the bullet and send these heavy-hitters the way of Mulan on Disney+, at least in a hybrid release. Phase 4 is sure to impress whenever we get a chance to see it. In the meantime, Marvel fanatics can re-live the 1980’s with these retro-designed Marvel Legends figures.
