Kubica not ruling out making another F1 return

It is a case of “never say never” for Robert Kubica with regards to making another comeback to the Formula 1 grid, but is realistic about the chances.

Kubica made a remarkable comeback to F1 in 2019 after an accident at Ronde di Andora back in 2011 left the Pole with a partially severed arm and seemingly ended what was a very promising F1 career.

But after a lengthy recovery, tests and reserve and development roles, Kubica lined up alongside George Russell at Williams for the 2019 season. However, he decided to call it a day after just one campaign as he and Russell raced almost exclusively at the back of the grid.

That dreary season has not put Kubica off making another return, though, if an opportunity came his way to step up from his current reserve role with Alfa Romeo.

“My history and my situation of the past years have shown that you can never say never,” Kubica said in an exclusive interview with Autosport.

“You should never exclude it. My situation taught me, and probably not only me, that even after a massive accident and a complicated comeback you should never say never.

“At the same time you have to be realistic about the situation. If I will get another chance I will evaluate that opportunity of course. If not, then that’s racing.

“I have been in Formula 1 twice. I made my debut in 2006 and somehow managed to come back, and that chance in 2019 was something special to me.

“Of course it was hidden by the difficult situation we faced at Williams and by the lack of performance. But still, when you think about it and about my career, not looking at the results, it is still something really special to have been in F1 twice.

“For the future you cannot say ‘no’ as it is difficult to predict. But it will not be the end of the world to me if I won’t get another chance in F1.

“And if there will be a possibility, I have to evaluate the situation first. I definitely don’t want to come back and drive last all the time. That doesn’t make any sense to me. But of course the opportunities are limited, so let’s wait and see.”

Kubica is currently combining his reserve duties at Alfa Romeo with a drive in DTM with BMW, where he has picked up a solitary point in the 12 races so far.
