The Sonic the Hedgehog movie is the latest video game adaptation to hit the big screen, but reviews for the much loved Sega game series-inspired film have been mixed to say the least.
Starring James Marsden, Jim Carrey and Ben Schwartz, the film follows Sonic as he goes on the run to escape the evil Dr. Robotnik (Carrey) in our world.
The varied reviews for the film largely praise Carrey’s turn as a delightfully evil villain in the film and Sonic’s adventures on screen certainly seem like a suitable outing for kids. But whether gamers will take as kindly to seeing the blue hedgehog’s debut remains to be seen.
Chatting to Metro.co.uk recently about the film, director Jeff Fowler said: ‘We had so much fun with this movie and I think audiences are gonna love it, and hopefully they’re going to be asking us to make more, which I would do in a heartbeat.’
Talking about creating a movie based on one of the most beloved carton characters of all time Fowler admitted: ‘It’s pressure but it’s the best kind of pressure.’
‘I mean, to have fans that are this passionate and to have a fan base this large, that’s what you want. ‘You want people that are out there and excited and just supportive. It really is a blessing to have a fan base like Sonic’s.’
When is the Sonic The Hedgehog movie released?
The Sonic the Hedgehog movie is due to be released in cinemas in the UK today, Friday 14 February.
Discussing what fans can expect from the movie, producer Neal Moritz revealed: ‘It’s a combination of what we love in movies – incredible action, comedy and a lot of heart that comes from Sonic’s friendship with the human characters.’
