Why talks between Georginio Wijnaldum and Liverpool over new contract have reached a stalemate

The Netherlands international has been a vital component in Jurgen Klopp’s side over recent seasons but is yet to put pen to paper on fresh terms.

With the January window now open, Wijnaldum is free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign sides ahead of a potential summer move.

However, according to Sky Sports, a new deal remains on the table and hasn’t been turned down by the player.

The report states that Wijnaldum is keen to stay at Anfield but wants his new wage packet to be closer to what is being handed to the club’s top earners.

Klopp has insisted that he wants the 30-year-old to commit his future to Liverpool, whereas the player has remained tight-lipped on his contract situation.

‘I hope so [that he signs], to be honest,’ the German boss told Amazon Sport in December.

‘You can see that, he plays all the time. We have a pretty good relationship. I hope so.’

‘I already said it in my previous interviews, I don’t speak about my contract situation,’ said Wijnaldum last month.

‘I speak about the games. The club should speak about my contract.’
