The first seven races of the NASCAR Cup Series season were generally fun and exciting, and they produced seven different winners. And now, after the first off weekend of the season, the series returns to the track for the Blu-Emu Maximum Pain Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway on Saturday night (7:30 p.m. ET, FS1).
The 500-lap race on NASCAR’s iconic paperclip-shaped short track follows the dirt race at Bristol Motor Speedway, which Joey Logano won. And he’ll start on the pole for Saturday’s race.
However, the starting lineup wasn’t determined through qualifying. Because of the challenges related to racing during the COVID-19 pandemic, most race weekends will not include practice or qualifying sessions. So in the absence of qualifying, NASCAR determines the starting lineup with a formula based on these factors:
- 25 percent: Driver’s finishing position from the previous race
- 25 percent: Car owner’s finishing position from the previous race
- 35 percent: Team owner points ranking
- 15 percent: Fastest lap from the previous race
Here’s the starting lineup for Blu-Emu Maximum Pain Relief 500 at Martinsville with Logano and Denny Hamlin on the front row.
