A new poster for Spider-Man: No Way Home has given fans another look at the return of Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, this time without his original metallic mask. The actor originally played Spider-Man’s greatest foe in 2002 opposite Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker. In the original film, Norman Osborn gained his enhanced strength and dangerous insanity from a scientific experiment gone wrong. He then donned a sleek, green armor suit and his purple glider to torment and hunt the web-slinger across New York. Despite dying at his own hand in the climactic battle of the movie, the villain returned for brief cameos in the two Spider-Man sequels. Dafoe’s Osborn is considered the definitive version of the character, with many wondering if anyone could ever top the Oscar nominee’s spirited, maniacal performance.
Tom Holland’s upcoming third Spider-Man movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spider-Man: No Way Home, is set to see several villains from across the three Spider-Universes brought back for another battle. As the recent trailer revealed, Dafoe’s Goblin will be brought into the MCU along with Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus from Spider-Man 2, Thomas Hayden-Church’s Sandman from Spider-Man 3, Rhys Ifans’ The Lizard from The Amazing Spider-Man and Jamie Foxx’s Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The highly anticipated film is also heavily rumored to feature the previous Spider-Men Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
In a new poster, released to Twitter by Sony Pictures Japan, Dafoe’s Green Goblin can be seen in the background of the image with an all-new look. The villain’s new attire, briefly spotted in the recent trailer, had many fans wondering if the Hobgoblin or Spider-Man 3’s New Goblin would be making an appearance, but the poster seems to confirm it’s actually Dafoe with an upgraded costume. The actor’s recognisable face can be seen, shrouded with a much more comic-accurate hood, flying around on his glider; which also looks to have received an update. After months of relative radio-silence, the marketing for Spider-Man: No Way Home is now firing on all cylinders, with just weeks to go until the film’s release. Earlier this week, the movie tried its hand at some viral marketing techniques by launching a TikTok account for The Daily Bugle, as run by JK. Simmons’ J. Jonah Jameson. Sony has also been releasing several TV spots for the comic book sequel, showcasing tiny sections of new footage from the film, including more interactions between Holland’s Peter Parker and Molina’s Doc Ock.
The new poster seems to confirm some previous costume-test leaks that implied Osborn will be ditching his rigid metal goblin-mask in favor of an improvised purple hood. As with Foxx’s version of Electro, who has swapped his blue skin for the comics’ original yellow lightning, the familiar villains seem to be getting much-welcomed alterations to make them even more comic-book accurate. Spider-Man: No Way Home has fans very excited, and every new poster or trailer that drops seems to only add to the ever-building hype. Spider-Man fans are eager to see Dafoe’s Green Goblin make his long-awaited return and the actor has a chance to flex his expressive acting style even more in his new mask-less costume.
